After typing username and password, the prompt to remember password comes up and I choose to remember. However it does not save it. This is a brand new install of version 36. Private browsing is off. I have refreshed the browser and reinstalled it. It does not work in safe mode. The website is not in the exceptions list, it doesn't even show up in the list of passwords. At a loss of what to try next.

Thanks FredMcD, but I had already checked that and passwords were set to remember. I solved the issue by uninstalling Firefox and manually deleting the Mozilla folders under the users profile under appdata. After that I did a reinstall of Firefox and passwords started saving again.

Do you still see any passwords in the Password Manager?

  • Tools > Options > Security: Passwords: "Saved Passwords" > "Show Passwords"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

It is possible that there is a problem with the key3.db file and the logins.json file that store the encrypted names and passwords in Firefox. You can rename the key3.db file (key3.db.old) and logins.json file (logins.json.old) and rename a possible signons.sqlite file (signons.sqlite.old) or move them to another folder to make it possible to undo the action. You need to set a new Master Password after renaming or deleting key3.db and all currently saved passwords are lost. If that has worked then you can remove the renamed files that are no longer needed. Otherwise you can rename the files to their previous names (key3.db and logins.json).

If you see passwords in the Password Manager (Tools > Options > Security: Passwords > "Saved Passwords") then you can save the existing passwords with the Password Exporter extension before removing/renaming files and re-import them afterward.

Check that the exported (xml) file has all the names and passwords.

Type about:preferences#security<enter> in the address bar.

Under Passwords, select Remember. To check the passwords you have listed, press Saved Passwords.

Warning. There are some web pages that do not allow browsers to record or fill in the log-in information. But if you go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) you can find several add-ons that can override this, and give you better control of your password information. You can also try a Form Filling add-on.

Form filling add-ons are not effected by such blocks.
