How do I complete clearing the recent history if, after choosing "debug script" and retrying, selecting "clear now" gives no results?

I'm trying to clear everything in the first four categories in "Clear recent history". I checked all four boxes and "Clear now". There was a message about a plugin, but my Flash player is current, if that's relevant. After the blue circle whirled for awhile, there was a message about the script, so I chose "Debug script". The box closed, and now when I open "Clear recent history", the "Form & Search" box is not checked, but the other three are. A file labeled "Old Firefox data" appeared on my desktop. When I select "Clear now", the box closes, but nothing seems to be happening, i.e., no blue circle. I went to "about:cache", and there are files there, which I assume, should have been removed if the tool was successful. I tried refreshing Firefox and repeating the procedure, but it didn't seem to help. My 7-year-old computer runs Vista, and I think it has the current version of Firefox. I hope that someone can help this tech dinosaur.

What entries do you still see? Are that entries from visited web pages or some special entries? Have you ever used external cleanup software?

You can try to clear the cache2 folder on the hard drive manually if there are still some leftover entries. You can find the location of the disk cache on the about:cache page.

Try to exclude the cookies from the "Clear history when Firefox closes" settings and instead let the cookies expire when Firefox is closed to make them session cookies.

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: Keep until: "I close Firefox"

Thank you, cor-el. I did as you suggested, which, I assume will help with future cookies. However, when I tried to clear the history again, nothing seemed to happen, and upon checking about:cache, there are still 20 entries in the disk cache storage, which implies to me that the browsing, cookies, and cache histories are, unfortunately, still intact.

Most, if not all are visited web pages from today. I don't recall ever using external cleanup software. I found the cache2 folder and will try to delete the entries after I close this page. I think that that will solve the problem, or at the very least, make it more manageable. Thank you so much for all of your help.
