When I close Thunderbird why does my badge icon go away? (OS X)

I recently switched to Thunderbird as I am not a fan of Mail and have used it previously with Ubuntu, but I noticed that when I close my Thunderbird app, my badge notifications go away on the dock. I dug around the preferences and I cannot seem to find a fix to it there. I have to wonder if it is doing an automatic check in the background at all, or if the app is not allowed to do so because, well, Apple tends to make a lot of strict rules for applications.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Running OS X El Capitan 10.11.2

Closed is closed. For there to be an entry in the Dock the program must be running.

Why does this not apply to Messages and Mail? Is there a background process within OS X for those?
