Email is apparently download/accepted by Thunderbird client on my computer but I cannot open ...the e-mail icon shows with a padlock, like it is locked out from Thunderbird.. Email server says not their fault; in fact I can view the newly received emails on their site.

Recently upgraded to Windows 10. Could this be source of problem?

The padlock means your connecting using a securty connection method. Nothing more. BTW those padlocks have been there as long as you have had those accounts.

Could the upgrade to Windows 10 be the issue. Most certainly. Are you using an anti virus? Does it have a firewall component? what about a mail scanner? Both of those things are knows causes of connection failure.
