Email from Gmail will not load into Inbox using Thunderbird 45.3.0.
When I click "Get Messages" from the tool bar, I am accustomed to seeing the following messages on the task bar:
"Connected to pop.gmail.com" "Downloading xxxx" And then an email message appears in my Inbox
For several days now, I get the first message saying "Connected to pop.gmail.com" while the progress bar moves along for awhile and then the progress bar stops and nothing else happens. If I go to the gmail website, I can see that there are messages in my gmail account.
When I try to send an email I get this sequence of events:
Status: Connected to smtp.gmail.com Message box displays with "Alert" and this text An error occurred while sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: Cannot connect to SMTP server 2607:f8b0:4003:c11:6c (2607:f8b0:40003:c11:6c:587), connect error 10060

there and may anti virus programs, I personally have issues with most of them in some way or another.
Personally I pay for ESET, but I have read some poor reviews on their detection rates of late. They don't get in your face all the time like some of the others do and they do not block things silently. I do however disable their email scanning. I think it is something of a waste in all anti virus products.
What operating system you use is also relevant in how well particular anti virus product perform on your machine.
I suggest you have a look at the linked page and like something you like from the test results. They appear to like Trend Micro. But I suggest you make your own determination. https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/windows-7/

Wayne - Thanks for this reply. All I can say is that the problem is most likely associated with my Anti-Virus program. I use Avast. I really do not like Avast. Among other issues, their customer service SUCKS. Nonetheless, Avast is installed on my computer.
This morning when I opened my email using Thunderbird, all of my messages were downloaded. Geez - I hate this type of "solution." I noticed that there were a few Windows updates overnight (I use Windows 7). Maybe that made a difference. Who knows. In this day and age of computers where we use software that can be modified and downloaded without us knowing, browsers making updates and so forth, it is hard to be able to set up an isolated test environment. For now, I am happy that my email is being downloaded onto my computer through Thunderbird. I suspect this unpredictable behavior to continue.
And now on Thursday September 1, 2016 my email is no longer being downloaded into Thunderbird.
lol: I rebooted and now my emails are being loaded into Thunderbird. I wish I knew what was going on. Hit/miss is not a solution.

That is what we know about Avast. Perhaps you should consider uninstalling it and getting an anti virus that does not make you life hell.
Matt - Thanks for your reply. I LOVE it. I stopped paying Avast years ago. I guess it is time to uninstall their crappy product. Do you have a suggestion for an anti-virus program?

Thanks Matt. I have removed Avast.
