When I had switched from Firefox to Internet Explorer last year, Explorer automatically captured my bookmarks, organized as I had them in Firefox, and created my Favorites list. All folders were there, etc.

I have just reinstalled the latest version of Firefox. However, it only showed the bookmarks I had when I had uninstalled it last year. When I imported my current favorites from Explorer, they did not incorporate into the old list of bookmarks on Firefox. Instead, there was a separate folder with all of the Explorer bookmarks. Therefore, there is now a ton of duplication. This will prove stupidly cumbersome to have to go back and forth between them, and as I add new bookmarks to the Firefox list.

Why doesn't Firefox automatically capture the Explorer favorites and merge them into the old Firefox list, deleting duplications? If this is not possible, could I delete the bookmark library in Firefox, and then have it import the favorites list from Explorer? That is the list/library I want now---not the old list on Firefox.

Years ago, when I had switched from Explorer to Firefox the first time, Firefox automatically captured my bookmarks from Explorer. Why not now?

When Firefox does an import of bookmarks from another browser that the user has installed, that is when the "imported from" folder comes into play.

But if you export to bookmarks.html or htm format and then import that bookmarks.html file into Firefox, all the bookmarks do get merged and aren't in a separate folder. In the Library window the menu item is named Import Bookmarks from HTML...

To export from Internet Explorer look to File > Import and Export > Export to a file and save the resultant HTM file to somewhere you can easily find it.

Thank you for your reply. I did as you said. It worked. However, it didn't merge the bookmarks. It simply made a second list, which is basically what it did by creating a "from Internet Explorer" folder. Oh well. Looks like I have a lot of organizing to do...
