I have a Home version of Windows, so I had to install Group Policy Management Editor independently. I am looking to uninstall it because I am trying to customize Mozilla through the mutually exclusive alternative: by inserting a JSON file in the Firefox install directory to accomplish the same goal. (I cannot do it through Group Policy because I lack the basic directory structure and am not sure how to get that). Unfortunately, I do not remember nor could I find the installation file, but nevertheless I am looking to undue this step--and I need your help! Please help me uninstall/disable Group Policy. Thank you!

You can inspect the Mozilla and Firefox keys with the Windows Registry Editor in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and possibly in HKEY_CURRENT_USER with the Windows Registry Editor to see whether GPO policy rules are active.

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Mozilla\Firefox\

Dear cor-el, Thanks for the reply! After checking the Registry Editor, I found the Firefox directory, but was unable to find anything related to GPO/policy rules. The only two directories there I found are "Extensions" and "TaskBarIDs."

Did you check the about:policies#active page to see whether policies are active?

The mere presence of the "Mozill\Firefox" key is sufficient to make Firefox display this notification, so if you have the Firefox key then remove it and only leave the Mozilla key or remove this key as well if it is empty.

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Mozilla\Firefox\ =>
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Mozilla\

Thanks for the quick response, cor-el! I have checked the about:policies page and none are active. Are you suggesting that I delete the Firefox key and this will rid the computer of GPCM?

Hi xcrunner72, I think cor-el was helping you look for any active Group Policy rules. I checked around and there seems to be a number of different ways to install Group Policy Editor on Windows 10 Home. You would probably find a solution at a different forum like: windowsForum TenForums or The Windows Club Forum

Good Luck!

If there is a HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Mozilla\Firefox\ present, but no policies are defined then Firefox will still display a message at the top of the Options/Preferences page.
