Is there a Thunderbird app available for Android smartphone? If not, which app is recommended? I now use the Gmail app for e-mail on the smartphone, but it is not synchronized with the desktop mail. How can that be done?

No

To synchronize mail between the phone and a desktop computer, the account should be set up as IMAP on both devices. It doesn't matter which apps are used on either device, as long as the setup is IMAP. If the desktop client is TB, calendars and contacts can also be synced with most mail services such as gmail, outlook.com, Yahoo etc.

It is IMAP on both devices. The port numbers are different; should they be identical?

The ports could be different if the connection security is 'none' (port 143) or SSL/TLS (port 993). That shouldn't affect the syncing if both setups are IMAP, but if you have a choice, select the secure (SSL/TLS) setting for both devices. Who is the mail provider, i.e. what's after @ in the address?
