So, long story but I upgraded to a beta to try to help with a different issue I was having (it was the add-ons that ultimately were causing the issues, not Thunderbird). After upgrading to 93.xbx, I started getting error messages when my email was downloading (I use POP3).

"The messages could not be filtered to folder 'xxxxxxxx' because adding a message to it failed. Verify that the folder is displaying properly or try to repair it from the folder properties."

I would rather not do this as it is a lot of folders.

I start looking around, end up seeing a few posts for older versions that say to backup my profile, delete it, import it and a bunch of other stuff.

My problem seems a little different than these also. Once the messages are downloaded, I can run the filters on them manually and they are filtered into the correct folders properly with no errors.

So, I have done the whole Repair Folder thing, it didn't help. I also have deleted the msf file. This also did not help. IF I download me email, get the errors, go find the folder that the error is about, I noticed that the folder shows normal text (Not BOLD) and no unread messages. If I then click on the folder, it will populate the amount of unread messages and also may go BOLD.

To me, since it works if I allow Thunderbird to download all the messages then I manually click Filter Selected Messages, this does not seem to be a profile problem and more of a timing issue where the file may be locked?

Anyone have any ideas?

Strangely enough, I went through each folder that I have (one by one by expanding them all and using the down arrow) and, watched them all fill in from non-bold to bold with an unread message count, then I selected Compact Folders and this seemed to work as my problem does not appear to exist today!

There could be a number of things impacting here. First thing first. Try Thunderbird in troubleshtooting mode (help menu) and continue when prompted.

That will eliminate addons, graphics cards and anti virus programs that inject their sometime broken code into Thunderbird. Still seeing the issue?

Use the file menu to compact your folders. (this might be slow, depending on the amount of data and how fast your disk is.

Hey Matt,

Thanks for responding!

So, Troubleshooting Mode makes no difference. (at this point, I disabled/deleted all my add-ons from my last issue anyway).

When you say Compact folders, I need a little clarification. I have used this option before and thought it was a per folder thing, unless I was clicked on Local Folders. Am I correct? Also, along with this, is there any way to see the progress? (When on Local Folders, I see a little blue progress bar, but is goes away pretty quick, but Thunderbird always seems a little extra sluggish for a while after I compact folders)

Thanks! N

Using the file menu makes is an every folder thing, and yes it will slow things, depending on your disk. An SSD is going to be fast and an ancient platter disk as is in my dell it will take an age (they cut corners on them to sell the box cheap in 2012)

There is no one size fits all. But the compact does actually copy the contents of existing folders to new files so disk speed is very important to the process. There is also a major update of the global search index which again will be slow as the location of each email you have is updated.

If it is a long time since you compacted then the process may be slower as there is more dead wood to remove from the storage files. That being the original purpose of the compact process to shrink the file to only use the space occupied by your current emails.

You will see the same progress in the status bar as you see for other actions. I tend to try not to use it on IMAP accounts as it resyncs the mail against the server (it shows up as downloaded 1 of whatever thousands of mail in the folder.). It is not a full download, but can really slow things down. But if you are having issues, it also validates all the account structure and mail data to ensure there is no corruption.

Hey Matt,

Sorry about my delay, I have been a little busy lately.

I have a little bit of an update. I had a few of my folders working, but everything seems to be hit or miss honestly. One day it will work, the next day it won't. Maybe it will work for a week, maybe only a couple hours. It is very odd.

In addition to this, I have excluded the whole Thunderbird Profiles directory from AV and MalwareBytes.

I will see if I can log in using Safemode in the next few days and see if this makes any changes, but, as far as I can tell from ProcMan, it does not look like anything is accessing anything in this directory.

Thanks!
