i have no idea what i did to make this happen. the page will first appear normally and then shift to this. any suggestions??

That's bizarre. Does it happen if you start up in Firefox's Safe Mode?

More info: Safe Mode (be careful not to "reset" anything permanently)

As a diagnostic, you could try creating a new "clean" Firefox profile using the Firefox Profile Manager. See: Managing profiles.

If that works, one of your extensions may be at fault, or a bad setting, or a corrupted file. If the cure isn't obvious, you can move your bookmarks and (selectively) your other settings to the new profile. See: Recovering important data from an old profile.
