I have windows xp on my system and kept getting the blue screen of death so knew i had to reinstall the OS. I went into the area that the stores the firefox and thunderbird folders and saved them to another drive. I reinstalled windows and then transfered the two folders above and thunderbird works fine it has all my data, however my firefox is having issues

The folder shows all the profiles I have but when I open firefox it does not show my saved passwords or bookmarks, it only shows the default bookmarks

I cannot find my password or bookmarks anywhere.

They should be in my profile file but they are not there. Any suggestion where they are? or were they not saved in the firefox folder where profile is kept?

Its ok, figured it out, it kept overriding the password file with the default. I created a new profile and pasted it in, works now

Bit off a confusing thing, but at least not lost anything

Hi,

Assuming that you have only a *.default profile folder in your new Firefox installation, exit Firefox completely and copy and overwrite the files places.sqlite, key3.db and signons.sqlite from the backup into this profile folder.

The places.sqlite has your bookmarks + history. The signons.sqlite stores passwords and key3.db is the key to those passwords.

Please also see this.

Not sure why this is happening. You have to copy the key3.db and signons.sqlite from the old Firefox profile which used to have passwords, if there were more than one profile in the old Firefox installation. I hope the files are not corrupted.
