With TB closed, how can I prevent DL of email upon launch?

TB automatically logs into my Verizon email account and and downloads new email upon launch, then crashes. One message repeatedly is duplicated in the directory before the crash. I have deleted the suspect message in my Verizon Web email account and emptied the trash there. On launch, TB still says it is downloading the rest of the messages then crashes.

Verizon support finds nothing wrong, suggested un/reinstall TB, which did not change anything.

I would like to launch TB but not to go to the Internet. This way I can see if the crash is being caused by something already downloaded. The only instructions I can find require this to be done from the Tools directory with TB running. Is there an off-line way to change this setting in my profile?

The Mozilla Crash Reporter TB article contains information of getting crash ids without Thunderbird running.. Could you please post the or the last few) crash ids so we can have a look at the information they contain (only submitted crash reports can be looked up)

FYI appending -offline to the target in a Thunderbird shortcut will open in offline mode.

Command line arguments are listed here https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Command_Line_Options#Mail.2FNews

Hi, Matt,

Below are three of the entries in the submitted folder. I "solved" the problem, but I'd like to know whether you can identify what was causing the crash.

I finally realized - doh - that with WiFi turned off, TB would launch without connecting. The directories showed multiple DLs of most of the emails in the Verizon queue, but those emails didn't get deleted from the queue before the crash.

Eventually I read and deleted all the pending emails from the Web mail page and launched TB with no crash. The next time new emails were available, TB downloaded them with no trouble. So I resolved the problem but hope the crash reports will tell you what the problem was. Thanks.

Here's something from the TB error console: Timestamp: 12/30/14, 8:30:05 AM Error: pop.verizon.net : server does not support RFC 5746, see CVE-2009-3555

This appears several times.
