Is there any way I can set only html files to appear when I click on file>open file (i.e, an html file on my own machine)? At the moment 'all files' appears - so any graphics, css files or whatever all appear. But I only want to see htm(l) files. Is there anywhere in about:config that this can be set?

Is this with a file browser or something else?

Try searching for *.html

No, just with Firefox. When I want to open a file on my PC, and go to File>Open File, under "Files of Type" what comes up by default is "all files". I want to change this default type to .html because otherwise the file list can be large, consisting as it does of .html files, .jpgs, .gifs, .css and many others, some nothing to do with web applications.

Maybe you could set that in Registry Editor (search "regedit"). I had a quick look, but I didn't find anything relevant. If you are really interested in this customization, consider to look further in this direction.

No - couldn't see anything under 'Mozilla' in the reg editor. As a VB developer, I know that it's easy to set the default file type in file dialog boxes so thought Firefox might have provided an avenue for this to be set by users. Maybe it's a security thing, but I'd have thought that a web browser might want to foreground web pages as the default type!

If you use a professional release of Windows, try to find something in the Local Group Policy Editor. Open Run panel with Ctrl + X and enter gpedit.msc. Computer/User configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Explorer (maybe Set a default associations configuration file?)

Alas, only have XP home on this machine :-( Anyway, no need to lose sleep over this, it ain't the end of the world, and thank you for your suggestions.
