how do you remove a word from firefox's default dictionary? if I wanted to remove the word "dog" or "and" for instance

there may a range of reasons for wanting to do this, including removing words you rarely use that have similar spellings to other commonly used words eg. "minute" and "minuet", removing words that you find personally offensive, or removing words that because of your linguistic or cultural background, you would not regard as words at all.

note I'm not asking how to removing words from my "custom dictionary", words that I added myself.

Hi

I have spoken to a few people and I think I may be able to help you with this.

There are two dictionary files, the default one that comes with your version of Firefox and the personal "custom" one that you create yourself with additional words and phrases.

If you want to edit the personal one;

  1. Copy about:support and paste into the address bar.
  2. Next to Profile Folder, click the icon marked Show Folder
  3. Find the file persdict.dat. Rename it to a Text File, open it, edit it, re save it as persdict.dat and replace.

If you want to edit the default dictionary, this could be more of a problem and significantly more technical to do. I would recommend that you look at the problem a different way and consider filtering pages based on unsuitable content using add-ons such as ProCon Latte Content Filter.

I hope this helps, but if not, please come back here and we can look into a different solution for you.

The default dictionary that comes with the Firefox installer is located in the dictionaries folder in the Firefox program folder. Dictionaries you install yourself are stored in the Firefox profile folder. You could edit the en-US.dic file and remove these words, but it is not recommended to edit files that are part of the Firefox installation.
