I don't know if this will work, but what if you turn off the login-saving feature (the feature that drops down from the key icon on the toolbar), and see whether the normal form autocomplete feature can remember your usernames?

Does that make sense and does it work?

My toolbar does not have a key icon.

The "Browser Privacy" option only has a selection to remember logins AND passwords. That does work if I turn it on but I don't want passwords remembered.

Thanks

The key icon would only be present when you on a page with a login form.

You could double-click the password field in the Password Manager and clear the saved password field, but that will cause Firefox to ask to update the saved password unless you would be in private browsing mode. I'm not sure if you can use saved form data to store only the name since such name/password fields might be excluded from saving.

OK, that will delete it but it will get remembered again the next time that I log in.

No, turn off the login feature completely.

Then see whether the form autocomplete function jumps in and starts remembering usernames the way it remembers other field entries.

OK. Will give it a try.

You can also use a form filling add-on.

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web Link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for what you want.

Strange discovery: The key icon appears when I go to the login screen for my Outlook account when I use my Win10 Tablet.

It is not appear when I go to the same login screen via my Win7 desktop machine.

Same login screen; same version of FF; same settings in options.

????????

Hi, go to Options > Privacy and Security (History), and make sure Remember search and form history is selected: Control whether Firefox automatically fills in forms. Also, under Forms and passwords, make sure Remember logins and passwords for websites is deselected.

That's how it's set.

Still no key icon.

I also have Win 7, no key icon. Don't worry about it. Different systems means sometimes different actions.

The key should only appear on the toolbar when Firefox needs you to interact with the password manager. Otherwise, it's hidden.

I don't know why you see different behavior on your tablet and your desktop PC running the same Windows with the same Firefox settings on the same page. Unless your desktop accidentally saved the setting to never fill the password on that page. To check on that:

When you're viewing your Privacy & Security settings, Forms & Passwords section, you'll notice an Exceptions button to the right of the "Remember logins and passwords for websites" setting. You could check that list to make sure that live.com is not blocked in there if you want Firefox to try to fill it.
