Downgrade from 102 to 91 because I can't use the add-ons 'Category Manager', 'Provider for CalDAV & CardDAV' and 'TbSync'

Recently there was an automatic update of Thunderbird to 102.2.2 (64-bits). Now I can't use the add-ons 'Category Manager', 'Provider for CalDAV & CardDAV' and 'TbSync' anymore because they are not compatible. They are for Thunderbird 91.0a1 - 99.0. I have a few questions regarding this matter: 1. Can I stop the automatic update of Thunderbird? How do I do that? 2. Can I downgrade Thunderbird from 102.2.2 to Thunderbird 99? A. I suppose I have to backup my profile folder. Download and install the version of Thunderbird 99 from https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/99.0b2/win64/nl/ (and than the dutch .exe file) B. Import the backup of my profile folder But: I'm not sure about these procedure. Do I have to remove Thunderbird 102.2.2 first? Is this correct and can I use the add-ons again. Or do I miss something?

Thanks in advance.

You can switch back to 102.2.1 which can be easily downloaded from the releases page. https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/releases/

That's the url for 102.2.1 https://download.mozilla.org/?product=thunderbird-102.2.1-SSL&os=win64&lang=en-US

I also have disabled the automatic update for now so that I stay on 102.2.1 until a bugfixed version is released.

That's not what I was looking for.

I understand now that with an update the profile usually (or always?) is changed and with an installation of an old version (in my case 91.9.1) copying the profile of 102.1.2 will not be allowed (or is not working without errors). Can anyone confirm that this is correct or is there a way to use the new profile (or parts of it) from 102.1.2 into 91.9.1?

Thanks in advance. Jan

You can revert to a prior version, but it is a bit risky. Be sure to back up your profile first. Here are steps to go back to previous version: - exit Thunderbird - click windows icon and 'r' key to open a command line window - enter thunderbird.exe -p --allow-downgrade and press enter key If all goes well, it reverts.

On your question, you can set Thunderbird to not auto update at tools>settings>general

Hello David, thanks for your response. When I click windows icon +'r' and enter in the command line: thunderbird.exe -p or thunderbird.exe -p -allow-downgrade or thunderbird.exe -p --allow-downgrade I get these possibilities: make, rename, delete or start existing profile (see attached file) there is no possibility to downgrade.

First you have to install the older version.

Then the command line allows you to override the "there be bugs and data loss in here. your doing this at your own risk" warning. (i really says something about the version being older, but I am feeling frivolous but the intent of the message is the same. To stop you breaking things.)

It also allows you to set the profile to use (your old one) and make it default.

In this case you will probably loos a significant portion of your address book as that was the major change in this version. A new interface, and new data formats I think went with it.

Every version of Thunderbird ever release is available on this link. https://releases.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/

First select the version, then the operating system and finally the language / locale to access the correct download file.

As an aside, unless you are a user of Google tasks, then the provider offers no significant benefit (and an extra step) over using the native caldav connection to google offered by Thunderbird for some years now. If you don't have that addon, it is one less to have compatability issues with.

The other two addons are both maintained by John Beiling. He is probably swamped as he is also responsible to the API used by addon developers and each update brings a mess of issues for addons.

Status category manager https://github.com/jobisoft/CategoryManager/issues/82 Statrus TBsync. https://github.com/jobisoft/TbSync/issues/591 My reading there is the futire may be it is only available for outlook, as others including apples site are covered by native caldav and carddav connections.

So it may be appropriate to ask just what you use tbsync for? There may be a better way.

Hello al-firefox, david and Matt,

Thanks for your responses.

Inspite of John Bieling's advice: I do not suggest downgrading. There is data being migrated from TB91 to TB102 (vCard storage in 102!!!!!) which is not reverted on downgrade, which can lead to massive data loss.DO NOT DO IT! ( https://github.com/jobisoft/TbSync/issues/591)

I downgraded from TB102. I know I'm stubborn but I had made a good backup of my profile and I always could turn back to TB102. I really needed the addresses and categories and I'm back to TB91 again.

What I did: 1. Turned off the automatic update: Extra - Preferences - Updates 2. Uninstalled the current TB Version 3. Downloaded the version I want to install from https://releases.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/ 4. selected the operating system 5. installed TB on the same location as the version I downgraded from 6. Lauched TB once it was installed 7. There is a warning. I Choosed 'New profile' 8. exited TB 9. clicked windows icon and 'r' key to open a command line window 10. entered 'thunderbird.exe --allow-downgrade' and press enter key (without -p !!)

Thanks to all of you, Jan
