Sites tend to be composed of components from numerous servers, some of which are controlled by the site and many of which are external servers, especially ad servers. These components are not limited to images, but include scripts, Flash media, sometimes entire pages.

You may simply be seeing errors associated with ads -- which is not to say they aren't annoying.

There are multiple options for filtering scripts (e.g., the YesScript and NoScript extensions) and ads (e.g., Adblock Plus). You might try one of those to see whether this problem goes away.

If you are seeing these sites in search results but not visiting them, consider the following:

Firefox supports a feature called link prefetching which can cause a page to load in the background if the site designates a link for prefetching. To turn that off:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the filter box, type or paste fetch and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click network.prefetch-next to switch its value from true to false.

Bad add-ons or external malware are a possibility. If the above doesn't help, try this:

(1) Disable ALL nonessential or unrecognized add-ons on these two tabs:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Plugins category
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category

Restart Firefox.

(2) If that doesn't help, run some supplemental scans. These three tools are highly regarded (and free) and don't conflict with our regular real-time security software:
