Task bar icon specified path does not exist, usually after computer reboot.

Sometimes, my task bar icon/shortcut for Firefox changes to a blank icon.

When I try to launch Firefox, I receive the following error message:

'C: \Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe The Specified path does not exist. Check the path, and then try again.'

To resolve, I do this: 1. Unpin Firefox from taskbar 2. Go to Start menu, locate Firefox, right click and pin to task bar.

I have also tried opening Firefox first, then pinning to the task bar.

This works for a while, then it does the same thing. Usually it happens after a reboot but I have seen it happen from just my computer locking. It’s been happening for a couple of weeks/months now.

Note: the Firefox executable on my machine is located here:

           C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

And not here:

           C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

Machine is running: Windows 8 Pro x64 Firefox version: Mozilla Firefox 26.0 (x86 en-US) (26.0)

Some external process seems to be changing your Firefox shortcut.

Many users have reported that malware has modified the shortcut to add a web address to it. This causes an advertising or other page to load at startup.

However, I have not heard of what you're describing.

There are some security and utility products that attempt to protect you from changes in your browser settings. These may go by the name "Surfing protection", "browser protection" or "home page" protection, and are included in products such as Advanced SystemCare and some security suites. You might check whether one of those could be rolling back your change.

And I think some supplemental security scans also would be a good idea. This article lists tools that other Firefox users have found helpful: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

Thank you everyone for all of the information! The anti-virus software on the machine is Symantec Cloud endpoint protection. Which has not reported any sort of incidents with the last scan occurring 3 hours ago. This machine is also sitting on an internal network behind a WatchGuard Firewall XTM5 series device.

Have you done any mall-ware scans? You should use several of them because one might miss something that another may pick up.
