I just installed Ubuntu 14.10, which comes with Firefox 36 installed. When going to the view menu and clicking on toolbars, there is no option for the menu bar, additional toolbar, bookmarks toolbar, add-on bar, and customize. If I go to customize there is again no option to view the menu toolbar. I have another laptop where Ubuntu was installed several weeks ago, no problem with Firefox 36 at all. What is going on?

I don't know if this will help;

Classic Theme Restorer (Customize Australis) {web link} Restore squared tabs, appmenu, add-ons bar, small button view and more on Australis UI (Windows/MacOSX/Linux + Fx 29+). http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=2827985 Classic Theme Restorer - Discussion Thread (v2)

Ubuntu 11.xx and later displays window menus in the control bar at the top of the screen with the switch to the Unity window manager.

You can try to disable all Ubuntu extensions to see if that disables this integration.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Cor-el,

I am pretty sure that it is the unity interface that is causing the problem. I have two laptops both running Ubuntu. One a dedicated Ubuntu machine, the other a dual boot windows 8.1/Ubuntu machine. Both running 14.10. The dedicated machine was set up about a month before the dual boot machine, which was set up last week.

Both machines have the same multiple desktop environments. On the dedicated machine all show Firefox 36 the same. It is on the dual boot machine that the problem arises. Gnome (metacity and Compiz) and Xfce all show the menu toolbar option for Firefox after installing the Classic Theme restorer add-on. Unfortunately, Ubuntu (default), which I think is Unity, does not.

Something seems to have changed with the Unity desktop, default Ubuntu, in the one month between the two installations.

I think I will live with it for the time being. Thanks for your help.

So that version of Linux puts the menu bar at the top of the screen, outside the application window, like Mac OS?

There is a bar at the top of the screen currently reading "ubuntu firefox 36 under view>toolbars menu bar is not listed|Firefox support Forum|Mozilla Support - Mozilla Firefox", but that will move with the application if you resize it. One one machine I can get the menu toolbar to show permamently immediately underneath that bar, on the other I can only access the menu toolbar by going to the top of the screen and "hovering" over the application name when I have resized the application window.

It appears that the application menu bar is not moving with the application, nor is it allowed as an application selection choice to permanently show.

What happens if you click the Alt key? Do you see a menu then?
