How do I connect the Thunderbird account on my laptop to the Thunderbird account on my desktop so that I can view e-mails on the laptop when they arrive on to the desktop. I have different e-mail addresses on each computer.

We don't connect computers together; we set them up to use the same account so all of a user's devices (computers/laptops/tablets/phones) see the same data.

The way to make this all work nicely is to use IMAP, where the server holds the data and your various devices all look at one set of messages and folders.

So, are you currently using POP or IMAP? In Thunderbird,

Tools|Account Settings|{select account}|Server Settings|Server Type will tell you.

You don't need a different email address on each device; in fact doing so makes life more complicated. (And how would a correspondent know which address to use to get in touch with you? He doesn't know which computer you're using right now.)

Add both accounts, using IMAP, to both computers. Then think about whether you really need (or want) both accounts, and if not, which you could do without. But many of us run multiple accounts - I have six set up here in Thunderbird.

You could set up one account to forward messages on to the other.
