How to make Firefox Quantum open new tabs with my default search engine instead of having to click the home button?

more options

When I open a new tab it goes to the Firefox homepage rather than my default search engine page. I have to click on the home button to take me to my search engine, two mouse clicks is too much! On the Firefox homepage when I type in a search it then takes me to my default search engine and I have to re-type my search because it's blank, what a waste of time and very frustrating. When I open the Firefox browser it opens my default search engine page straight away but not with new tabs, why is this and what can be done to rectify this inconsistency?

You can use this extension to override the built-in new tab page:

That's strange. Is it one of the built-in search engines?
