After reading, then deleting the last unread message in my inbox, Thunderbird then opens a previously read message. How do I stop it from doing that?

I sometimes keep read messages in my inbox until I can get back to and take action on them. In the mean time, I receive more unread messages. When I go through the new unread messages, generally deleting them, after I delete the last one, Thunderbird then opens a previously read message in my inbox. I don't want it to do that. I just want Thunderbird to return to display of the inbox after reading & deleting the last unread message. How can I make Thunderbird stop opening a previously read message until I have made that choice?

Thanks for any help.......

To stop opening of next email after deleting you can use this addon:

How to Install Add-on Extension: After downloading addon extension *.xpi file to desktop or downloads folder.

In Thunderbird 'Tools' > 'Add-ons' or 'Menu icon' > 'Add-ons'

  • Click on gear wheel icon and select 'Install Add-on From File'.
  • Locate the *.xpi file you downloaded and click on 'Open'.
  • You may need to restart Thunderbird when prompted.

I downloaded and installed the add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-gb/thunderbird/addon/deselect-on-delete/ , but it doesn't do what I need. In fact, I can't tell that it does anything. The same problem remains. When I have finished reading and deleting the last of the unread messages in my inbox, Thunderbird still opens the last previously read message that I have in my inbox. I would like to only open previously read messages when I choose to, not every time I have finished reading and deleting all my new messages. Maybe Thunderbird isn't designed to work that way, but I'm ready to close the program when I have finished looking at new messages, not have a previously read message pop up. It's just an unnecessary step to have to close the message I didn't want to see, then close the program.

Soyou performed all the instructions: you downloaded the xpi file. Then installed ithe addon extension in thunderbird. check the addon extension was shown as enabled. Finally, you restarted Thunderbird to allow the addon to work.

This should now mean that whenever you delete an email, it will not auto open next message.

Yes, downloaded, installed, checked that the add-on is enabled, restarted Thunderbird. I can see in Tools/Add-ons that it is enabled.

Please note that I'm not trying to stop Thunderbird from auto opening the next "unread" message. I just want it to not open a "previously read" message after I delete the last of my new messages. After deleting the last one of my new messages, I just want the message window to close. It doesn't make sense to me to have Thunderbird open a previously read message until I choose to see that message again, so thought there might be an option to stop it from doing that. Thanks for your suggestion, but I'm not sure that the add-on I installed was intended to do what I need.
