Can I create a bookmarks bar icon for sites that don't automatically generate them?

- When adding a new site to the bookmarks bar, most sites automatically generate an icon. That includes commercial sites (e.g., Bank of America, Amazon) and also nonprofit sites (e.g., Wikipedia). - With an icon in the bookmarks bar, you can delete the written name altogether, which saves a good deal of space. - What can you do when a site doesn't automatically provide an icon? Example: The new bank for my Health Savings Account, Optum Bank, has a great corporate icon, but the website doesn't generate that icon for a bookmark. So Firefox uses its own default icon (sort of a gray globe thingy). OK, but the default icon will only work for 1 site; another one like that, and you have 2 identical icons--so you have to go back to using textual names.

Is there a way to create custom icons for the bookmarks bar?

I don't think that there is an exact feature to individualize different bookmarks, but there are a couple of user styles you can explore with the add-on called Stylish. All of the styles that can be added are here https://userstyles.org/styles/browse?as=1&search_terms=Change+favi...

Guigs: Thanks for the reply. I installed the Stylish add-on, and it enables the user to add background images ("themes"), kind of like wallpaper, to the top of the Firefox window. As far as custom icons for the bookmarks bar, it doesn't seem to help unless one has the time to learn HTML and CSS, which I don't.

Yesterday, I tried to answer the question, where does Firefox find the bookmark icons in the first place? (It seems they are called "favicons.") Clearly, they are coded into most websites, but if the site's programmer didn't create one, then Firefox uses its own default favicon. There doesn't seem to be any way to override that.

If I'm not understanding something here, please correct me!

Thanks.
