messages sent TO or CC me (gmail account, IMAP in Tbird) that I move to project file are deleted when I clean out my SENT messages folder - big problem!!
I'm using Thunderbird 52.7.0 32-bit with my gmail accounts. I like to clean out my sent messages periodically. I noticed that large groups of messages that should have been filed in project folder(s) were missing - I had been moved them from my inbox to the folder(s) and everything seemed to be fine. Until I cleaned out the SENT messages. Is this related to GMAIL's 'feature' of showing everything including my 'sent' message in a thread, and clobbering the entire thread when saying delete from the regular gmail interface (not Thunderbird)? I hate to think that I can never delete sent messages to clean out my data storage! A work-around might be to move the 'sent' message to the Tbird Inbox and then move the entire thread to my project folder ... but that seems like a lot of extra housekeeping. Thanks for any suggestions. Bill

I don't why you would be deleting the Sent messages. Why don't you just move them into the project folder, so you keep a full record of the conversation? I do this all the time (I aim to keep both Inbox and Sent folders empty) with no data loss.
Essentially, gmail keeps a single copy of any message, and labels it to control what folders it appears in. So if not done right, a deletion could remove it entirely.
I don't often recommend this, but looking into the All Mail folder might help you recover these.

where is your "project folder" if in local folders the move is an implicit delete from gmail.
Please advise if the following means that these are "local folders" - and if so what I should change. Folders hang off the wbausch@gmail.com account, which is configured as IMAP in Thunderbird. I can access the messages in folders/subfolders via gmail online. Screen grab of Thunderbird folders is attached. Thanks.
