The desktop icons I have grown familiar with in my former browsers have all been replaced by white squares. Is there an easy way to get my originals restored or must I put up with these new unfamiliar ones.

You can check for issues with the Windows icon cache.

Try to rebuild the icon cache (IconCache.db).

  1. Open the Task Manager (Shift+Ctrl+ESC)
  2. In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
  3. Open the file picker via "File > New Task (Run)" and click the Browse button.
  4. Type or Paste %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local or %LocalAppData% in the File name field (AppData is a hidden folder).
  5. Select the IconCache.db file and use "Delete" in the right-click context menu to delete the file.
  6. After the IconCache.db file has been deleted, start a new explorer.exe process via "File > New Task" to get the desktop and Taskbar back.

Note that IconCache.db is a hidden file, so make sure you can see hidden files.

Further to my question about deskktop icons. I can now see that the white squares I mentioned do in fact contain a miniature picture of my original icons in the middle of the squares. Is there a way to get rid of the white square and enlarge the icons in the middle to their original size.

Are you talking about just the icons for Firefox, or all of them?

Try rebooting the computer.

Thanks for the suggestion Fred McD but having done that the icons are still the same. My original ones do appear in miniature form in the middle of the white squares but I haven't yet discovered an uncomplicated way tochange them back. I have to admit to not being very computer savvy.

Thanks for the suggestion but as an almost complete computer virgin I would be scared that I might mess something else up if I do what you suggest. I'll just have to put up with the new icons.
