I want to have a default download location with the ability to select an alternate location on any download, not to have the last download location remembered as the current save to location.

I have a primary folder to which I want to have the majority of my downloads go to, but on some occasions, I want a download to go to some other location. The current settings "Save files to" and "Always ask you where to save files" do not enable this capability.

Others have asked for this ability too.

Try adding the preference marked in bold in the quote below from searchfox. org.

browser.download.useDownloadDir - bool True - Save files directly to the folder configured via the browser.download.folderList preference. False - Always ask the user where to save a file and default to browser.download.lastDir when displaying a folder picker dialog

Perhaps I missed something here, but this suggestion doesn't seem to help.

True - Save files directly to the folder configured via the browser.download.folderList preference False - Always ask the user where to save a file and default to browser.download.lastDir when displaying a folder picker dialog

False is clearly not what I want. True is the current setting, and browser.download.folderList currently = 1. Yet the current folder shown for a download is from browser.download.lastDir I want a default folder shown for a download, not a changing directory, with the option to select an alternate directory for the downoad.

I found this on the Internet: The value of browser.download.folderList can be set to 0, 1, or 2. When set to 0, Firefox saves all downloaded files to the user's desktop. When set to 1, these downloads go to the Downloads folder. When set to 2, the location specified for the most recent download is used again.

None of these are the option that I want.

What have I missed?

On the General page of Settings under Downloads, try specifying the folder you want in "Save files to" then change to Always ask you where to save files. (Note: remove blank space in link below.)

Unfortunately that doesn't work either. Firefox always uses the last saved location when the "Always ask you where to save files" option is selected, and one can see that last folder value in browser.download.lastDir.

Does the file picker give you the option to choose a location? I can add files to the left pane of the file picker so it's usually a matter of one or two clicks to select a destination folder.

Yes, but that is not exactly what I want.

Looks like there is no current solution to my desire. Thanks, all, for trying to help.
