Why does Thunderbird try to logon to an email account that I deleted from Thunderbird

I just want to use Thunderbird to access a Newsgroup, so I deleted my gmail email account from Thunderbird (which Thunderbird apparently found on its own: it was in Thunderbird when I first started it).

But Thunderbird keeps trying to logon to the gmail account - popping up a dialog requiring me to provide my gmail password and authorize Thunderbird. It does this every 15 minutes (the frequency I want Thunderbird to check for Newsgroup posts).

How can I stop this?

Do you have a Google calendar or Contacts address book that was added at the same time as the mail account?

"Do you have a Google calendar or Contacts address book that was added at the same time as the mail account?"

I don't have any Google calendar or contacts at Google; but I did get a calendar and contacts when I first opened Thunderbird. I believe they came from my Outlook calendar and contacts.

I was going to delete them from Thunderbird, but was afraid that might cause them to be deleted from Outlook.

I should have added: after I posted my question here, I tried to submit a reply to a Newsgroup post.

It appears that Thunderbird wants to use may gmail account to send the reply ... so I got asked to authorize again. When I refused to authorize, my reply failed.

I'm confused.

I take it back.

I never realized there was a calendar or contacts at Google: I found them at Google and in Thunderbird.

I assume they're causing my problem; so how do I get rid of them?

Well, you still need the gmail account, so do you want to delete the calendar?

In Address Book, right-click the Google book, Remove. On the Calendar tab, right-click the Google calendar, Unsubscribe. Check Outgoing Server (SMTP) in Account Settings and delete the gmail smtp if it's still there.

I think I have the calendar deleted, but I can't get any option to delete the gmail smtp that is still there.

There are four buttons to the right of the outgoing server name: Add, Edit, Remove and Set Default. Remove and Set Default are grayed out (I have selected the server name).

The server name reads "Google Mail - smtp.gmail.com (Default)".

That is the same name as the Outgoing Server (SMTP) for my newsgroup (news.eternal-september.org)

There is a dropdown option to "Use default server". Will choosing that work for the newsgroup? Possibly then allow me to delete the outgoing gmail server?

You can't deleted the Default account or server. Set another one as default (which you'll need if you're posting to newsgroups), then remove the first one.

"You can't deleted the Default account or server".

I assumed that.

My dilemma arose because there are only 2 choices in the Outgoing Server (SMTP) dropdown now: 1) the google server designated as "Google Mail - smtp.gmail.com (Default)" 2) a second choice saying just "Use default server"

I have no idea what "Use default server" means - is it a "real" server? Can I just choose that one, then delete the google server?

If that won't work, where would I find another server?

Just to jump in. You do not need an SMTP server if posting to a newsgroup. The SMTP server is only needed if also writing email to a member of a group.
