Does firefox display an error message? This support article should help.
What seems most probably is that firefox is in offline mode. To fix this, click on the "File" menu and make sure that "Work Offline" is unchecked (If you have the orange firefox button enabled, press the "alt" key to temporarily show the menu bar).
