I added Ginger Grammar and Spll check some toime ago and found it really useful and very easy to spot my bloopers and correct them. Then about three monhs ago I joined a consumer organisation which meant was posting on their forum regularly. Ginger was uncompatible with this and also with my ISP forum and I eventually had to disable it. I then read somewhere that Ginger is a spamming or virus programme so decided to uninstall it completely. This I did though the uninstall feature. I then went looking in Add-ons to see what I could replace it with and found that it was still listed as an extension but only with an enable/disable button. All other extensions have a remove option.

I looked on this site and followed the instructions to remove an extension. Under the Application Basics section, I clicked on Show Folder. and a window opened listing lots of files but no sign of Ginger. The only place I can find a Ginger reference is under Extensions, as below. Ginger - Grammar and Spell Checker 2.0.0.8 true firefox@gingersoftware.com

I have checked the folder contents under Profile and can't see any sign of Ginger.

Having got that far I have no idea where to go next. Can anybody help me remove this programme, please?

Philipp, thanks for staying with this and I'm pleased to say your suggested locations worked.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Ginger\Mozilla\firefox@gingersoftware.com and in your registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\mozilla\Firefox\Extensions\\firefox@gingersoftware.com

I deleted the files found in the first location, found nothing in the second and when I checked my extensions, Ginger had gone. Well done and thank you. I will now run Malwarebytes and the other suggested programmes.

hello Figgerty, this addon might be installed as a global extension in the firefox program folder or through the registry: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_add-ons#Global_extension

you also can search your whole computer (also include hidden files/folders) for the file named firefox@gingersoftware.com.xpi and delete that...

Have you tried uninstalling it like any other program in Windows Control Panel > Uninstall a program? Having only an enable/disable button makes me suspect that the Add-on was added to Firefox by a program installed on your computer. You should do that with Firefox closed so that the Add-on (Extension or Plugin) added by the program is properly removed from Firefox.

See - (Windows 7 instructions) http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/uninstall-change-program#uninstall-change-program=windows-7

Yes, I did uninstall the programme Ginger first with FF closed. Then when I started FF and checked to see what other spell checker I could use to replace Ginger I found that Ginger was still there as an extension. Perhaps thats why it was being called a virus or spam programme.

I searched my whole computer for firefox@gingersoftware.com.xpi and found Ginger Setup and Ginger Setup Helper (both programmes with Ginger branding) and deleted them both. I also found the same files (without branding) elsewhere and deleted them also. I then checked extensions and Ginger is still there and without a Remove button. It is acting like a virus in that it does not want to be removed.

Thank you for trying to help.

according to a google search, the addon might be located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Ginger\Mozilla\firefox@gingersoftware.com and in your registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\mozilla\Firefox\Extensions\\firefox@gingersoftware.com

you might also want to run a full scan of your system with multiple tools like the free version of malwarebytes, adwcleaner and microsoft safety scanner.
