You need to read up your operating manuals for your device and OS for how to do ctrl click and shift click. These are the actions you need to emulate to do multiple selections.

At the OS level (Win 8) there is a solution. But the application (Thunderbird) does not support it, at least not that I can find. There must by many thousands of Thunderbird users on a Win 8 tablet without mouse and keyboard. How do you folks select multiple emails?
