I am trying to save my thunderbird emails to a permanent on my computer location. As I understand it, this means copying them to 'local folders' within the thunderbird client.

For my first email address I fill out:

Your name as shown to others email address password

But I get a message saying: Configuration cannot be verified - is the username or password wrong?

The password is definitely right, I've gone in to check I don't really know what my username is, but does this matter?

Is the issue that I'm using IMAP? I'm assuming not because surely it would say that's the problem?

Thanks, Cathy

For you to connect to the mail-server you need both username and password Username is often your email-address. (Like nnnn.mmmm@SomeMailProvider .net) You name shown to others is just that and isn't needed for verifying.

So, if my email address is correct and my password is correct, what am I missing? Can you copy IMAP to Local Folders?

Yes Do you need to download a lot? Many mail-providers have special tools to compress a big folder into a single file that can easily be downloaded. Could be a simpler way esp if your leaving that provider.

Set up your account as IMAP Under Account settings / Synchronizing & Storage Set keep messages for this account on this computer That way the whole message should be downloaded not just the header.

Then just move (or copy) your mail to a folder under Local folders.

This can be made by a filter or manually with drag and drop

I am in the middle of doing it manually and slow - yes! I have many thousands of emails and it is obviously going to take a while. I will report when it has finished processing to confirm that it worked.
