The default browser is opened immediately on connection on some public WiFi networks. I can't get my VPN connection to start before that. Is my Sync info being sent across the network when the browser opens? And is there any way to prevent that from happening other than changing my default browser?

Sync will "ping" the Sync server to look for Sync events and data from other connected devices as Firefox is being launched. If you would Disconnect that device from Sync it wouldn't "ping" on launch. BUT, Firefox does "ping" other servers upon launch that are related to Mozilla and the operation of Firefox.
