I wish to use a new email address and keep all files separate from the present address so want to uninstall and then reinstall Thunderbird but am worried that doing so will lose all of my current folders. Thunderbird is connected with my outlook email which also seems to hold all of the Thunderbird folders but will it continue to do so after uninstallation?

  • Right click on 'bad' mail account in Folder Pane and select 'Settings'
  • Account Settings window opens
  • make sure wrongly set up account is selected
  • clickon 'Account Actions
  • select 'REmove Account'
  • click on 'OK'
  • Restart Thunderbird.

You can add many email addresses/mail accounts in the one profile.

There are various 'views' you can use to see what ever you would like in the Folder Pane.

You can use the small arrows next to mail account name to collapse the view of folders or subfolders.

To see only folders with unread mail; if colour is blue then there is new unread mail. 'Menu icon' > 'Folders' > 'Unread'

If you have specific folders you use a lot, you can right click on a folder and select as 'Favourite', then you can change the view to only show 'Favourite' folders. 'Menu icon' > 'Folders' > 'Favourite'

'Menu icon' > 'Folders' > 'All ' option gets you back to see all the folders again.

There are quite a few different ways to alter what you see to declutter the view.

What does 'separate' mean? A separate OS user account? A separate Thunderbird profile? A separate account in the same profile?

so want to uninstall and then reinstall Thunderbird

Beats me. What exactly are you trying to achieve by re-installing Thunderbird?

Setting up a new address on T'bird seems to utilise the same folders as the present address what's more I have a lot of folders so having to scroll down to the second/ third etc address is a bore and would be much easier if it was possible to have 2 T'bird progs., one for each address. Plus several other reasons which are easy enough to imagine.

My question is, "will I be able to access the current T'bird files that are on my PC after the uninstall and will they still be available on Outlook?". Thanks for reply. Jim.

Profile files are stored separately from the Thunderbird program files. The program files are static and do not change (except when you upgrade the Thunderbird application version). Because we store profile and program files separately, you can uninstall Thunderbird without losing your messages and settings, and if something goes wrong with a Thunderbird update your information will still be available. It also means that you don't have to reinstall Thunderbird in order to delete your information or troubleshoot a problem.

I still have no idea what you're trying to accomplish with re-installing the application, but if you want to waste your time, just go ahead.

Presumably creating a new profile would get you what you want, but this is mainly my guess, as you haven't been really clear. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data https://support.mozilla.org/kb/using-multiple-profiles

Thanks for reply. Sorry not to have been clearer with my question, as a rank amateur I find difficulty in expressing myself in computerese. I'd forgotten that all folders for a given email address can be squashed into a single line which is a great help when using more than one address, not perfect but not bad either and good enough for my needs.

Pushing my luck would you tell me how to delete an email address set up in error, I tried deletion with no success. Thsanks again. Jim.
