Let's review history settings on the Options page.

Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options

In the left column, "Privacy & Security" and then on the right side, I have in the History section "Firefox will: Never remember history"

Still after closing all Firefox windows, and opening a new Firefox window there is some history! I have to clear it manually by clicking the button on the right of the setting. Before I cleared it last time there were megabytes of history. What goes wrong with automatic clearing of the history?

Did you check the content of the files in the cache?

I see something appear in the disk cache when I open the about:preferences page that looks like an OCSP response, possibly because Firefox does a check for updates. I also see safe browsing related items.

See about:networking

So this might only be about data that Firefox uses internally.

Am I really supposed to understand all the things that are on the network page? Ugh!

The new version even doesn't allow me to delete everything. It always keeps something on the HD!

I'm loosing confidence in Firefox...
