Hi,

there is this issue with random mails getting into the same thread. Please see the screenshot. So it looks more like threads get merged. It started with a thread in March and then mails from two different companies in 08.2020 till 10.2020 get added into the old thread, which is very disturbing. How is that even possible technically? What used by Thunderbird 68.10.0 (64-bit) to match threads? I did try to compact the mailbox but the issue is unchanged.

Thanks in advance.

Right-click the folder in the Folder Pane, Properties, Repair Folder, to rebuild the index. Any difference?

Good point, thanks

But after doing the repair run and switching threads back on, the wrongly assembled thread still is the same. So the repair had no effect on this error.

It may be that the email program used by the sender of the message that gets added into the wrong thread omits certain headers that TB uses to thread messages, forcing a fallback to a common element, e.g. the word 'Windhoff', to organize the threads. Stopping threading by Subject, as described in the kb article, might avoid this.

It's possible with certain add-ons to modify the Subject or headers of mis-threaded messages, to force them out of threads.
