many websites won't open unless I whitelist them from the ad blocker. I can't find an ad blocker in settings

The website probably wants you to disable Enhanced Tracking Protection. It's not an ad blocking feature per se, but some websites see it as one because it's blocking some tracking code that's used for displaying ads.
