All unread messages marked as read
In the last two days all of my messages have been immediately marked as read (i.e., unread messages do not show up in bold). In options I have chosen 'Automatically mark messages as read after displaying for 10 seconds', and in the past this has meant the incoming message showed as bold until I opened and read it, and that the main display indicated how many unread messages I had. I am using Firefox 78.13.0 in Windows 10, but this did not happen after an update: it simply happened overnight. Just now I sent a message from my Gmail account to my Firefox address and have not opened it in Firefox: on my iPad it shows as unread, but on my PC it shows as read, even though I haven't touched it. This problem applies to all three mailboxes in the Firefox account: when I look at the main Firefox display, there is no bold to indicate that any of the mailboxes have new messages.
This is very annoying in terms of business--I can't immediately see whose messages I have not yet read, and whether any new messages have arrived in a particular mailbox since I last opened Firefox (it is too distracting to keep it open all the time). Many thanks for any help.

Do you use Bitdefender? Its anti-spam tool is known to do this.

Is this with Firefox, or are you using Thunderbird?

If there is still a problem,
Start Firefox using Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode {web link}
A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?
While you are in Troubleshoot(Safe) mode;
Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Firefox. Since this feature was added to Firefox it has gradually improved but there are still a few glitches.

Sorry, of course I meant Thunderbird every time I said Firefox. I was up late last night...
Open Preferences in Thunderbird. Look for Reading & Display. Check the settings.
Turn on Automatically Mark Messages As Read and select After Displaying For and try 6-10 seconds.
Many thanks. I reset it to 8 seconds, but the problem persists. However, it does appear to be somewhat intermittent: in one of the three mailboxes the bold face for unread messages was appearing this afternoon, but now it is not again.

Thank you very much! I disabled the Bitdefender anti-spam tool and new messages are now showing as bold.
I have the same problem and I don't use Bitdefender. I exited MalwareBytes and it made no difference. My only anti-virus in Microsoft Defender. This problem began when I updated to 94.0b1.

If you can demonstrate this in a new profile with 'steps to reproduce', consider submitting a report to Bugzilla. So far, the issue in the release 91 is due to Bitdefender, but there might be internal bugs in the beta 94.

You don't have to do this to fix Thunderbird. Also do not turn off Anti-Spam in Bitdefender it is not needed to fix this.
The problem can be easily solved by turning off one option in the Bitdefender Anti-Spam Toolbar.
Goto the Bitdefender Anti-Spam Tool Bar and click on the "Settings gear" on the left. Select the "Tool Bar Settings tab". Under Email Rules uncheck "Mark Spam Email Message as Read"
Now Thunderbird will NOT auto-mark ALL messages as "READ" and you do not have to disable Bitdefender's Anti-Spam. Thunderbird will now work as it always had before and mark the message only after you have looked at it.
