I am having difficulty installing an old firefox profile into the new Firefox browser. The Firefox Trouble Shooting suggestions are very confusing and hard to follow with lack of step by step detail. You should have created a backup of your personal data in the Firefox profile folder as Windows doesn't tell you what files will be removed or replaced.

You should always be careful with using System Restore as this can cause your Firefox installation to get corrupted and may lead to data loss if files are replaced by older copies.

Did Windows create a restore point?

You can look at a utility to browse System Restore points.
