No one website or action seems to do this all the time, but I'll be running two tabs and no other applications and firefox will freeze or "beach ball" for over a minute. Sometimes it will unfreeze and then refreeze for another period of time as well. Very frustrating. Please help!

It's probably down to one or two plugins (add-ons/extensions).

Try starting firefox in safe mode and disable the plugins, etc.

Addendum:

I forgot to mention that I had a similar problem recently.

I started firefox in safe mode, but did not disable anything.

I then opened up the add-ons tab, unchecked the "update add-ons automatically" option (in the drop-list next to "search all add-ons"), and then I also clicked on "reset all add-ons to update manually".

That did the trick for me....
