Auto-scoll (middle mouse button) gone in Firefox 20/Windows 7 64-bit

I recently upgraded both my work PC and my home PC to Firefox 20.0.1. My work PC (Win XP 32-bit) works fine, but my home PC (Win 7 64-bit) no longer allows me to auto-scroll when I click the middle mouse button (it does nothing). I have tried restarting Firefox with all addons disabled, as well as a totally fresh install, but haven't had any luck. To clarify, the mouse wheel itself still works as it should, it's just clicking it in to auto-scroll that's the problem. I have confirmed that 'Use Autoscrolling' is set under Options>Advanced on both computers.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Did you check the setting?

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General: Browsing: "Use autoscrolling"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

I did confirm the setting in the advanced section of the options. I had a second (accidental) thread where I noted it. I thought I had copied it here. Starting in safe mode with no addons didn't resolve the issue either. Autoscroll worked fine before upgrading to 20.x, and I had not changed nor upgraded any addons during that time.

Yes, I mentioned that above your post.

Did you check the setting for the scroll wheel in the mouse driver setting in the Windows Control Panel to make sure that you have it set to the default action?

Is the middle-mouse button otherwise working properly (i.e. middle-clicking a links open in new tab)?

The button is working correctly. It has no issues in Chrome, IE or Safari.

Can you confirm that the button is working in Firefox?

If the button works in other applications then this doesn't imply that it works in Firefox as well.

I can confirm that the wheel works, but I will have to get back to you on the button itself. I'm not at my home PC.

I've tested it on my home PC and the middle mouse button does not work at all. Other threads seem to attribute this to a FF 19.x+ issue:
