How do I change the order of my 5 mail accounts to put my default at the top? Currently using any email browser option (Chrome Firfox IE) sends it using the one at the top which is one I never use. I have specifically set the default in the setttings option and figure that it picks up the top one NOT the default one. This issue never used to crop up but since a recent upgrade to Thunderbird it picks top of the list not preferred on the list. I appreciate I could delete the account then add it at the bottom (tedious) but there must be a way to a) reset the order and b) to stop the email add on from picking out the top one

Two things.

Have you set the default in Tools menu (alt+T) > account settings > outgoing server (SMTP)?

Second, try this add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/manually-sort-folders/?src=ss

Hi Matt In reverse order: thank you very much for the add on - the default in Chrome and Firefox now pick up what should be the default (....which in answer to your first point was yes outgoing server settings had the email I wanted clearly marked as default yet all browsers used no 1 on the list) I am now happily accessing the default email account which also happens to be no 1 in my list of email accounts so... big smile from me (funny how little yet irritating things absorb one disproportionately!) Much appreciated

Hey Matt,

I am a newbie to this forum, but not to the importance of this question - nor the long gestation of both FF and TB. Surely, one of the hallmarks of both successes has been responsiveness to myriad USER'S NEEDS - not being solely driven by a singular view of the "correct" approach.

Notwithstanding filters and redirects, if my multiple mail accounts derived from multiple providers' servers and platforms is best served by grouping and ordering to suit ME - then TB had better come up with the permanent fix and fast - otherwise, the competition will prevail.

So, we still await response from the add-on author - FF has moved on from 38x to 41x and the once beautiful add-on is still incompatible - could you please address this issue again . . . . or at least remove the still inaccurate tag of "solved". It is not. It is a basic and glaring oversight.

If this all sounds a bit aggro from a newbie, I apologize unreservedly, but after a lifetime in this industry, my age and impatience is increasingly measured not by what has gone before, but what I can do with the precious remainder.

The whole purpose of the add-on eco system is to offer features to users that the base product does not have, mostly small things with a limited appeal, but in the case of the calendar and some other things tthe small and few are rather pointless.

However moving forward the core team intend to deliver more features as add-ons, not less. It reduces overall complexity I am told.

You are free to use whatever software suits your needs. Personally I am prepared to put up with quite a bt for the open source badge, but I really do not get your point. There is a clear and simple option to sort accounts.

The add-on works with Thunderbird 17.0a1 - 42.0, Have you seen Zenos excellent how to for installing add-ons? http://chrisramsden.vfast.co.uk/3_How_to_install_Add-ons_in_Thunderbird.html IT appears to be still up on his old site. I can not find the link to the new one at the moment

Your not the only one looking to a shorter future than history.

Much grovelling Matt . . . thousands of sincere apologies . . . all hail our revered gurus . . . and a quick explanation of all my incompatibility issues with this once more beloved add-on before I get dragged away for my next flogging of 100 lashes.

Get ready for a good laugh at my expense. At my age, I have the luxury of affording it . . . and it helps keep the grandchildren amused . . . and my own children worried!

Frankly, I was dismayed by what I perceived was an initially dismissive treatment of user requirements to order their email accounts. Secondly, I found your supplied link of "how to add an add-on" simply reinforced common practice - very good advice, but known. So, somewhat prickly and with familiarity breeding in the background, I prepared several brilliant screenshots with the glaring RED ERROR MESSAGE "This Add-on is not compatible with . . . . blah, blah, blah".

And then the penny dropped . . . with a crash! I am sure you are aware that the suggested add-on is downloaded using our browser - in my case, the latest update of Firefox. You will also realize that the Add-ons task pages for Firefox and Thunderbird are almost identical . . . identical in style if not in every substance.

I am sure you know where this is going by now . . . and I have a folio of brilliant screenshots to verify it . . . I have been merrily trying to crowbar the recommended THUNDERBIRD Add-on into FIREFOX. No wonder it was proving incompatible. Now directed correctly into TB, all is sweetness and harmony . . .

But, hang on Matt . . . gotta go . . . the fella with the cat-o-nine tails whip just returned. Reprieve tomorrow . . . Mondays are strictly limited to boiling in oil.

I have, several times. Ah, that message comes when I try to choose the 'open' option. It's OK with the 'save'option.
