Firefox will NOT remember passwords even though I have ticked the option to do so.

I have ticked the option for Firefox to remember passwords but it never does. This is most irritating. What the dickens is the secret?? Google does it, as well as remembering what I've put in baskets. Firefox wipes everything as soon as I exit.

Based on your post above, we'll assume that you've gone into Menu > Options > Security and ticked the box 'remember logins for sites.' However, please double check.

If that is the case, then I recommend starting Firefox in Safe Mode to temporarily load it into a clean configuration.

Safe Mode is a special Firefox mode that can be used to troubleshoot and fix problems. Safe Mode temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes) that might be causing problems. By comparing Firefox behavior in normal mode to its behavior in Safe Mode you may be able to pinpoint the cause of the problem.

How to start Firefox in Safe Mode: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode#w_how-to-start-firefox-in-safe-mode

  • Once in Safe Mode: Go back into Menu > Options > Security again and verify the box 'remember logins for sites' is selected.
  • Navigate to a website for which you would like to have your login saved and attempt to sign in.

Are you prompted to save your login information at this point?

Thanks. I've tried all that but it still doesn't remember a thing and automatically log me in or remember basket contents as Google and IE do.

E.g. I started in Safe Mode, logged into a forum (Sonar software by Cakewalk). It didn't automatically log me straight in as other browsers do, so I had to manually log in. It does however offer me my log in name and password but I always have to select and choose Enter for those.

Note that a detail like a website remembering you (log you in automatically) is stored in a cookie.

You can use these steps to make a website recognize and remember you:

  • You can create a cookie "Allow" exception to keep specific cookies, especially in case of secure websites and when cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy -> "Use custom settings for history" -> Cookies: Exceptions

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.

  • do not clear the Cookies
  • do not clear the Site Preferences
  • clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exception for password and other website specific data
  • clearing "Cookies" will remove all selected cookies including cookies with an "Allow" exception you may want to keep
