Keep getting pop-up .sbd and .smf folders on my desktop when I open Thunderbird.

I recently downloaded Thunderbird 52.5.0 and now every time I open Thunderbird every folder on my desktop get duplicated on my desktop as a ".sbd" or ".smf" file. I can drag these duplicate .sbd and .smf folders to the trash but they reappear each time I open Thunderbird. I have already trashed and re-downloaded Thunderbird a second time to no avail. I am working on an older 08 Macbook Pro using El Capitan 10.11.6. I am upgrading to a new 2017 Mackbook Pro and want to know if this problem will persist on my new Mac with an updated operating system. Or will the new software eliminate these duplicates.

What's the Local Directory setting in Thunderbird's Account Settings? It seems to be acting as if your desktop is set as the working folder for the account.
