Years ago when first starting using TB, I set the Message List to Alternating Colors (white and grey). I don't remember how I did it?? I've searched and searched internet, but I can't find the setting for it!

My TB is currently set that way, but I want to see what it looks like without it and I can't find a setting.

I have the add-on Account Colors, but it's not in there! I'm talking about the List of all the Messages (not the Folder List which I have set with Tree).

Does anyone know where that setting is??

Select Help/Troubleshooting Information, click Open or Show Folder to open the profile folder, close TB. Do you see a folder named chrome, and in that folder a userChrome.css file? That is probably where you have the code to 'stripe' the message list.

Nope. I don't have any file or folder named userChrome.css. Or any file/folder named user*.*, or even *.css.

I did try the troubleshooting option to Open in Safe Mode with no add-ons. It started and the message rows are still alternating colors.

Just can't figure out how I got it to do that!

  • I also created a new user, added an email address and it shows up with alternating rows!

Okay, I also renamed the Thunderbird directory... I'm using Mac, Sierra, btw. TB created a brand new directory and still the alternating rows for Messages! I'm stumped!

It must be a Mac feature, as on W10 there's no striping with the default theme - the theme that applies in safe mode. There probably is a way to 'de-stripe' with a userChrome.css, even on OSX, but in the meantime you could try a theme, such as Monterail Dark, which doesn't stripe the list, at least on Windows (not all themes work the same on all OSes).

I tried several different themes, to no avail. The "stripes" are still there.

I guess I could add a userChrome.css file. Do you know of a good link that describes how to create and use a css file for Thunderbird.

And, would you perhaps know if there's a way to Default Thunderbird back to ALL Default Settings without losing your emails (accounts, with passwords, etc)?

Maybe I could copy my TB folder and try setting everything back to defaults. I would try that if I can without losing all my emails. I do use imap, but there are lots in my Local Folder.

The kb article cited in my first reply suggests a script to remove striping in the second paragraph. The userChrome.css file would look like this: @namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul");

/* remove zebra striping */

  1. threadTree treechildren::-moz-tree-row(odd) {

background-image: none !important; } Try this with the default theme.

The best way to start with a clean setup, without affecting your existing data, is to create a new profile with Profile Manager. After you add your accounts in the new profile, mail, address books, calendars etc. can be transferred from the old to the new profile.

Thank you. I'm going to give this a shot this weekend as it looks like might take some time. I'll post back. Thank you for the help and links.

I think zebra striping is still in the mac theme. Might be why so many mac used are using alternative themes (Walnut appear to be favored by mac users)
