Loosing focus after selecting an email

I don't know if it is by design or if I misconfigured something, but when I click on an email in the message list, the focus goes directly to the email preview window.

But - how would I manually select multiple emails (e. g. for moving or deletion)? Normally in Windows I would select an item with the mouse and then press SHIFT+DOWN or SHIFT+END or SHIFT+PG_DWN etc. to select further contiguous items with the keyboard.

I've not found a way to do this in Thunderbird.

Thanks!

Running: 78.5.0 (64-Bit) on Windows 10

Update - apparently, when I click and then click again (not double-click), the focus stays in the mail list. But when I move to another mail with the cursor (not pressing SHIFT), the focus again jumps to the email.

Just clicking on an email to press DELETE therefore doesn't even work most of the tiem.
