When I open Firefox and do a search, I want each page I navigate to open a new tab. ie. rather than clicking through the search results and losing the original search unless I go back, I want a new tab to open up automatically with the new page so that I can view the search and the various pages I go to from the search simultaneously

You should be able to do this in the Google Search settings.

Where results open: Open search results in a new browser window.
