mousing over some video links on bbc.com the pointer does not change to the 'select' icon and clicking on the link gets no response.

I have found this also. I just download the video and watch it later.

Hello,

Some problems with Flash video playback can be resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in your Flash Player settings. (See this article for more information on using the Flash plugin in Firefox).

To disable hardware acceleration in Flash Player:

  1. Go to this Adobe Flash Player Help page.
  2. Right-click on the Flash Player logo on that page.
  3. Click on Settings in the context menu. The Adobe Flash Player Settings screen will open.
  4. Click on the icon at the bottom-left of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window to open the Display panel.

    The image "fpSettings1.PNG" does not exist.
  5. Remove the check mark from Enable hardware acceleration.
  6. Click Close to close the Adobe Flash Player Settings Window.
  7. Restart Firefox.

This Flash Player Help - Display Settings page has more information on Flash Player hardware acceleration, if you're interested.

Does this solve the problem? Let us know.

Tried that didn't work. It is not that Firefox tries to play the video and fails, it is that Firefox does not recognize it as a video or a link to a video in the first place.

I went to bbc.com and had no problem. I only have two things left;

  • Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache.
  • Clear the Cache

Press the <Alt> or <F10> key to bring up the tool bar. Followed by;

Windows; Tools > Options Linux; Edit > Preferences Mac; application name > Preferences

Then Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: Clear Now

and

  • Remove Cookies

Press the <Alt> or <F10> key to bring up the tool bar. Followed by;

Windows; Tools > Options Linux; Edit > Preferences Mac; application name > Preferences

Then Privacy. Under History, select Firefox will Use Custom Settings. There is a button on the right side called Show Cookies.

If there is still a problem, Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode; Press the <Alt> or <F10> key to bring up the tool bar. Followed by;

Windows; Tools > Options Linux; Edit > Preferences Mac; application name > Preferences

Then Advanced > General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Poke around safe web sites and see if there is still a problem. Then restart

I have done all of the above. I have even reinstalled Firefox. Firefox still does not recognize videos on BBC.com.

Again the problem is that Firefox does not see that it is a video. It does not even try to play it.

Neither Chrome nor IE have this problem.

A possible cause is that the file doesn't have a recognized file extension or otherwise isn't send with a supported MIME type.

It is also possible that an extension or security software is interfering.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

I've tried safe mode, no joy.

I now have the sane problem on two different machines. on two Win 7 installations and two Ubuntu installations.

Have you tried other web sites? Do you have any problem?

Do you have any kind of blocking add-ons or software?

Other websites seem to work fine.

I did a complete tear out on one Win 7 installation; deleted Firefox and all profiles and personal info and settings, cleaned the registry deleted all temp files and caches. I did a new install with no extras and with only MS Security Essential running.

No video on bbc.com

It could be the work of one of your add-ons, or even add / mal-ware. Look thru your add-ons list and make sure you know what each one is there for. Also, check the programs that are on your computer Windows > Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Mac: Open the "Applications" folder Go thru the list and use a web search to check any that you don't know what they are.

There were no add-ons. It was an absolutely clean install. This also doesn't address why this problem spans machines and operating systems.

You never said, does this happen on other web sites?

Disable your virus protection, go to BBC.com and try once. Then re-enable virus protection.

Anything?
