I'm using Windows 7 Pro. Firefox just started crashing today. The Crash Reporter shows up at launch. I tried rebooting; tried reinstalling Firefox. I'm not using any fancy extensions or plug-ins or anything.

For some reason Firefox is crashing with an "out of memory" error. The crash report shows memory 70% full. That doesn't really make sense right after a reboot...

Could you try starting up in Firefox's Safe Mode? Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).

Will Firefox start?

In case this is caused by a recent installation, could you check the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program, and click the "Installed on" column heading to bring the most recent additions to the top. Anything unrecognized or suspicious here?

Trying to start Firefox in Safe Mode brings up the Crash Reporter as well.

The only recent installation is from today, trying to update Firefox.

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking, and try again.

So your Windows Control Panel looks roughly the same as mine (attached)?

I suggest some supplemental malware scans just in case. This support article lists tools other Firefox users have found helpful: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware.

Yes, my Windows Control Panel looks similar.

I've tried to boot into Safe Mode, but when I hold F8 down, it just takes me into the BIOS Setup.

We have McAfee running, but I'm running a TrendMicro HouseCall scan right now.

more options

The TrendMicro scan didn't pick anything up. I tried uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling it, but it still won't launch.

Are you able to extract any other crash IDs that might have more/different information? The support article mentions a way to get them even if you can't run Firefox normally: Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly).

To start the computer that way, press the F8 key Repeatedly, do not hold in down.

  • Firefox Crash Reports

Enter about:crashes in a new tab or window address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear. Copy the 5 most recent Report IDs that start with bp- and paste them into your response here.

If you can't get Firefox to open, you will have to do this the hard way. Open the file browser / explorer on your computer. Depending on your system, you need to find this folder; C:\Users\=<User Name>=\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox Once you are there, look for a folder called Crash Reports. Inside are two folders; submitted and pending. Go into each. Copy the last 5 File Names in each folder. Remember, the last 5 include the date and time created. Post all the information in the reply box below.
