Maybe an email on the server is causing a log jam. Logon to your webmail account using a browser. Empty the Junk folder. In the Inbox, Read and delete (or move to another folder) the oldest but not downloaded email.

In thunderbird click on GetMail.

There maybe more than one email causing the issue, so you may need to repeat the above to remove old mot downloaded emails.
