How do I distinguish between the normal search window and a private window? Can I change the color or [lace an icon of some sort on the private window that makes it readily apparent that I'm on private search?

Normally a private window will have a white-mask-on-purple-tab icon near the minimize-maximize-close buttons at the upper right.

However, if you start Firefox in automatic private browsing mode, then all windows are private and there is no icon. (That mode is selected by going into Options/Privacy/Firefox will: Never remember history)

Does that match up with your Firefox?

You were correct, I had changed to all windows being private. Changed back and now show white on purple icon. Thanks for the help.

You can use an extension to get Private Browsing mode support per tab.

  • Private Browsing mode tabs get a dashed underline
  • You can toggle Private Browsing mode on/off via the right-click context menu of a tab
